I’m holding out for the iPhone until January and wonering if this is the real deal.

No, it’s not. This rumor has been around for years. The iPhone is a GSM device. If it goes to any other carrier in the US, then it will go to T-Mobile, since they and AT&T are the only two GSM carriers in the US. The chances of Apple giving the phone to AT&T’s main competitor are pretty slim in that case, too.

Verizon’s network uses CDMA technology. It would cost Apple millions do develop, test and market the iPhone for that technology. They are already making a fortune selling through AT&T, and I see no reason for them to kill that golden goose.

If you’re with Verizon, why don’t you look at the Android phones instead? I see at least three models in Verizon’s line (The Incredible, the Droid 2 and the Samsung Fascinate) that I would take over an iPhone in a NY second.
